Our accommodation was on three levels accessed by a winding staircase. It would not be suitable for a person with mobility issues. The breakfasts were delightful, freshly cooked and fresh out of the oven. Both our host & staff were attentive and extremely courteous. We have stayed in some incredible holiday accommodation over the years & Canal Deluxe would be one of the best. Show less

Posting again as my needs have changed a little bit as my partner had a skiing accident and will be moving to Smithers with me in the end!

very easy walking. Beautiful bush lined tracks. Really saddening to see how much the glacier has retreated in the last 125 years but most of all in the last 10 years. The power of nature is visible all around you with the evidence of a major flood a few years ago having caused major slips and blocked parts of the track. DOC and other have done an amazing job to get the track safe to walk again. … Date of experience: February 2021 Hawke's Bay Region, New Zealand 187 contributions 70 helpful votes The day was glorious and the helicopters buzzing over the glaciers which was great to see. But in walking you are very limited in how far you can go and how much you can see. On a previous visit we could walk right along dry river bed to the glacier, this is not so now. You can see it, but from a distance which was disappointing. The surrounding bush and walks made it all worthwhile though. My recommendation is to take a helicopter for the best viewing. … Date of experience: February 2021 Kate H wrote a review Mar 4 Charleston, New Zealand 61 contributions 27 helpful votes This review comes from someone who has many times walked to the terminal face of the glacier.
